40 Years of Combined Team Experience. Crane-Assisted Removal for Hazardous Trees.
Wild Oak Tree Service removes dead, hazardous, storm-damaged, and unwanted trees across Austin, San Antonio, and the Texas Hill Country. We don’t treat every removal the same way. A dead cedar on an open lot and a mature live oak leaning toward a house get different plans, different equipment, and a different level of care, and we work out which one we’re dealing with before anyone picks up a saw.

When a Tree Needs to Be Removed
Not every tree with a visible flaw needs to be removed, but a handful of signs are worth taking seriously enough to call for a professional look.
- A sudden lean, especially with cracked or heaving soil on the opposite side, which usually means the root system is actively failing rather than settling into a permanent tilt
- Large dead limbs sitting in the upper canopy, sometimes called widow-makers, that can fall without warning and from real height
- Fungal growth or mushrooms at the base of the trunk, often a sign of internal decay that has been developing for years longer than it has been visible from outside
- Deep cracks in the trunk, or a noticeably hollow sound when the trunk is tapped, both signs the wood inside isn’t as sound as the bark suggests
- A live oak showing veinal necrosis, rapid leaf drop, or other signs of oak wilt that has progressed past the point where the tree can reasonably be saved
How We Approach a Removal
Directional Felling
On open lots with a clear drop zone, a standard directional fell handles most jobs efficiently and without unnecessary cost.
Sectional Dismantling
On the tighter lots common across Austin’s older neighborhoods, or on any property where the tree sits near a house, fence, or pool, we work the tree down in sections instead, cutting and lowering piece by piece rather than trying to drop the whole tree at once.
Crane-Assisted Removal
For the largest, most hazardous, or most awkwardly positioned trees, we bring in crane-assisted removal, lifting sections clear of the structure rather than dropping them through the canopy and hoping the rigging holds.
Central Texas’s Rocky, Shallow Soil
Much of the Austin area and the Hill Country sits on thin soil over limestone bedrock, which limits how deep a root system can grow.
- Trees here often anchor more shallowly than they would in deeper soils found elsewhere in the country
- This changes how a compromised tree is likely to fail and how much margin for error a removal crew actually has
- We evaluate root and soil conditions specifically because of this before recommending a removal method
Equipment and Personnel
- Professional climbing systems for canopy access and positioning
- Rigging equipment to lower cut sections in a controlled manner near structures
- Cranes for the largest and most hazardous removals
- Chippers and hauling equipment to process and remove brush and wood
- Ground protection to reduce lawn and driveway damage during the job
What’s Included
- Cutting, processing, and hauling of the tree
- A stump cut close to grade
- General cleanup of the immediate work area
Stump grinding, hauling of debris beyond the standard scope, and any restoration work are identified separately in your written estimate, so there’s no ambiguity about what the quoted price actually covers.

Licensed, Bonded, and Insured
We carry full licensing, bonding, and insurance on every job, with documentation available on request before work begins. Tree work involves real risk, to your property and to the crew doing the climbing, and that coverage is what protects you if anything unexpected happens on site.
Tree Removal Permitting in Austin TX
Tree removal within Austin city limits can require a permit, particularly for protected species and heritage trees regulated under the city’s tree ordinance. Removing a protected tree without the proper approval can result in fines that far exceed the cost of the permit itself, and this is exactly the kind of detail that’s easy to miss if you’re not familiar with the local code. We handle permitting as part of the job and flag what applies to your specific property during the estimate rather than leaving you to research it independently.
