One of the Most Destructive Tree Diseases in the Country, and It’s Here in the Hill Country
Oak wilt has devastated live oak populations across Central Texas, affecting oaks in roughly 65 Texas counties and killing trees within weeks to months of infection. Wild Oak Tree Service diagnoses and treats oak wilt across Austin, San Antonio, and the surrounding Hill Country, where this disease is not a rare event, it’s an ongoing, active threat to the live oak canopy that defines this region.

What is Oak Wilt?
Oak wilt is caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum, which invades a tree’s water-conducting tissue. The tree’s own defense response, producing compounds that try to wall off the infection, ends up clogging its own vascular system, and the tree dies of dehydration even when the roots have plenty of water available. All oak species can be infected, but live oaks and red oaks play different roles in how the disease spreads.
How Oak Wilt Spreads
Root Grafts, the Dominant Spread Path for Live Oaks
Live oaks naturally form interconnected root systems with neighboring live oaks, sometimes extending well over 100 feet. Once one tree in a connected group is infected, the fungus travels through these root grafts to every tree sharing that root system, moving an average of 75 feet per year. This is why oak wilt typically shows up as an expanding circle of dead and dying trees rather than isolated cases, and it’s the reason a single infected tree threatens every live oak connected to it, not just itself.
Beetles, the Path That Starts New Infection Centers
Red oaks that die from oak wilt often develop fungal mats beneath the bark that emit a fruity odor. Sap-feeding beetles called nitidulids are attracted to these mats, pick up fungal spores, and can carry them a mile or more to fresh wounds on healthy oaks, starting an entirely new infection center. These beetles are most active from February through June, which is why pruning oaks during this window carries real risk in this region.
Signs of Oak Wilt
- Veinal necrosis, yellow or brown discoloration along the leaf veins while the rest of the leaf stays green
- Leaves browning from the margins inward, sometimes described as a scorched appearance
- Rapid wilting and leaf drop, often within weeks of symptoms first appearing
- An expanding pattern of dead or dying oaks radiating outward from a central point
Diagnosis
Because several other stresses, drought, root damage, other diseases, can produce symptoms that look similar at a glance, we evaluate the specific pattern of symptoms, the tree’s position relative to other affected oaks, and species-specific presentation before confirming oak wilt. Lab testing is available for cases where visual diagnosis isn’t conclusive.
Treatment Options with Wild Oak Tree Service
Fungicide Injection
Propiconazole injected into the root flare of a healthy, high-value tree offers meaningful protection, roughly 85 to 90 percent effective when applied preventively to a tree that isn’t yet infected. Treatment is far less reliable once a tree is already showing significant symptoms, which is why we recommend proactive treatment of valuable oaks near a known infection center rather than waiting until symptoms appear.
Trenching to Sever Root Connections
For groups of live oaks with confirmed infection nearby, trenching at least 100 feet beyond the dripline of infected trees and at least four feet deep physically severs the root grafts carrying the fungus between trees. This is often the only way to stop root-based spread through an already-connected grove.
Sanitation Practices
Avoiding pruning during February through June, painting all oak wounds immediately regardless of season, and sanitizing cutting equipment with a bleach or disinfectant solution between trees, especially when any tree in the group may be infected. We follow these practices on every oak job we do in this region, not just confirmed oak wilt cases.
What Homeowners Can Do
- Avoid pruning or wounding oak trees between February and June
- Paint any oak wound immediately, no matter the season
- Never move firewood from red oaks that may have died of oak wilt, since fungal mats can persist in the wood
- Watch for veinal necrosis and rapid leaf drop on live oaks, especially near a known infection center
- Call for an evaluation early, since treatment options narrow significantly once a tree is heavily symptomatic
